Being a vegan has not been easy for me, and that's a dramatic understatement. My family was not accepting or understanding when I decided to adopt a vegan diet, and it's had lasting effects.
When I first began eliminating foods from my diet, my parents didn't know what to make of it. They thought I was crazy, and reacted with fear and hostility. They took me to psychiatrists who tried to discourage me from going vegan; I was banned from eating at the dinner table with my parents (I could only eat after my father was in bed); and other family members refused to speak/associate with me, afraid that my vegan "insanity" was contagious and they might catch it.
Perhaps worst of all, my parents, especially my mother, began controlling all aspects of my life. My mother has always been a "smother-mother," or "helicopter-mom" but after I finished high school and became a vegan, it became exponentially worse. She now controls about everything in my life, and it's absolutely suffocating. I'm not allowed to do anything or go anywhere without her permission.
But she thinks it's for my own good; that she's protecting me. She thinks, if left on my own, I'd never make it. That the world would eat me alive. Which is why I'm reaching out here: to try to connect with other vegans, hopefully find a soulmate, and escape from the unhealthy and soul-crushing authority of my parents.
And of course, I'm not perfect (that doesn't mean I stray from my veganism, which is incredibly important to me). I have flaws, and I want to be honest about them. I think it's only fair to any potential partner. I have depression (largely from the way people have treated me over the years, but it also runs in my family), as well as Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, which is an anxiety disorder (if you've ever watched the show "Monk," you might be familiar with it).
But that doesn't mean I'm not still a good person. I'm an introvert, sensitive, quiet, patient, and a good listener. I'm very low-key, and a home-body (yet in my current situation, I'm very lonely).
I'm trying to be a writer (short stories, novels, graphic novels, poetry), and am very much the artistic/intellectual type. I wanted to be an actor, but my parents forbade it. I also used to paint/draw, but my parents took away my art supplies, and now I just don't have the time anymore. I haven't had much luck in publishing, other than letters to the editor and a few online articles for an animal rights group.

Ended 16-year relationship June 2023. I made love decisions all those years ago based on hormones and now I'd want to make love decisions based on compatibility and ease.
I have three dogs, two elderly, and they will always come first. I take care of community cats. I lost my horse to colic over 10 years ago and I get sad around horses. I take bugs outside, humanely trap mice, and stop for strays. I don't understand the egocentric idea that animals are here for us to use.
I'm a force-free dog trainer; my obsession is Nose Work. I love to watch dogs do what they are born to do. I also work part-time with the neurodivergent population, as a Registered Behavior Technician. I went to undergrad for psych/anthro and have a Masters in Experimental Psych. My thesis was on cognition in pigeons, and I also researched horses and elephants.
I still use an ecig after quitting smoking in 2010. Otherwise, pretty healthy. Drink only occasionally and try and get regular exercise (usually walking/hiking with dogs). Not a bicycler, skier, or kayaker. I love a game of tennis and would probably like pickle ball.
The microwave is my friend. I love Mexican, Italian, and veg sushi. Don't care for curry so most Indian is out.
I'm independent and introverted; I can be silly and loving and like to dance. I listen to mostly classic rock; love the oldies, blues, live jazz. Country and rap don't do it for me, though I'm not opposed to being educated about what's good.
Not political, though I vote democrat and detest the orange buffoon and all he stands for. I try to be accepting and easy going but won't deal with racism, sexism, sexual orientationism (I don't think that's a word), specieism (that one isn't either). I'm pretty intolerant of intolerance :)
I mostly read dog training books, though I just finished Robin Hobbs (second time) and love great character development. I enjoy a good biography. I binge watch TV occasionally and enjoy a movie at the theatre or on the couch. Horror is out. I check DoesTheDogDie regularly and won't watch anything that involves harm to an animal.
I have a tattoo of a wolf and another of Rick Springfield's signature. Hair has a lot of gray and is curly (read frizzy) and pretty long. I wear it in a braid most of the time. I very seldom wear makeup and I often don't shave legs or pits in the cooler months (lazy).
