Why I'm Vegan |
I've been vegan now for about 14 years and my ideas, opinions and knowledge have definitely changed over the years but the core reason for being vegan has not changed; we should strive to cause no harm or suffering and to help prevent it where we can. If anything, that ideal has become stronger and more solidified; only the details or nuances on what this means may differ. |

More About Me |
Updating this section years later - originally I said that I was intelligent, quirky, messy and that I don't "go with the flow". That has not changed. What may have changed is that I have greater understanding of some of the reasons. I would hope that everybody becomes wiser as they get older and gains greater self-awareness, though I think that it's also easy to become cynical and develop anxiety or fears (or develop other adaptations) that affect your day-to-day existence simply because the longer you are alive, the more likely that you have accumulated bad memories from what you have witnessed, and what you have experienced of the negative realities of our world. As for me, I am wiser though I still have a long way to go. I'm still curious and mercurial which is not conducive to being organized, and I do pay the price for that. I think it helps me in other ways to keep myself from depression. I have very strong emotions and yet a really logical and analytical backbone which are often at battle. I hate writing about myself, but as I just demonstrated, I can get carried away in spite of myself, so it's a good spot to stop and mention some of the more surface things, like... My big focus right now is spending time outdoors where I live. It's rural, there's field, there's forest, there is always something to discover, from identifying plant life (which unfortunately includes battling some pretty aggressive invasive plants) and animal life, to weird insects and various other critters. Sitting amongst the tall grass knowing that I can't even be seen from the road is magical for some reason. I have worked in technology (IT) for many years, yet I have to admit some of the magic is not there like it used to be. There are some ideas I had for projects that I am keen on if I can figure out a way to fit that in with the other things that dominate my time, without dropping the ball on one of them ... Animal rescue/providing care/reducing suffering/promoting well-being. This is often painful, often sad, but it's what I value the most. |

I'm Looking For |
It would be nice to meet people that are kind, smart, and who would like to share ideas, share experiences, even just to yak about trivial things. I like to brainstorm on some topics, problem solve (yeah, that's my techie side I guess though brain storming does not have to be restricted to any particular topic). It would also be nice to have less trivial and more intellectual discussions. I am pretty big on critical thinking and these days that seems to be more important than ever. I have not grown out of, nor do I expect to, grow out of my love for heavy music which gives me an adrenaline boost. I miss the days of sitting outside on a hot summer night with tiki torches, awesome music and in the past it would have included beer, but with me nowadays it might be half a beer or non-alcoholic (yes, I said that). To be honest I don't really care too much for hanging around people that are drunk when I am sober, it's just not as fun now, and I just don't like how alcohol makes me feel. My eyes will almost certainly glaze over if sports is the topic. :) I've been non-religious since - well one of my earliest memories is from when my mom first brought me to church and the concept didn't make sense to me even then. It's not like I walk around telling people my thoughts on religion; it's just not something I engage in one way or another. I don't have a set expectation about any particular type of relationship or friendship: I like the idea of (a mutual) clicking with somebody, being comfortable, being able to be yourself and have some kind of enjoyment. |
