| I am a fool and a pianist. I love the arts: literature, music, painting, theater, cinema, poetry, etc. And I am vegan. A few years ago I met an old homeless cowboy. He told me that if he won the lottery he would build a swimming pool park for kids...and he described the layout in great detail. A place where kids can be kids, he said. I wonder what his childhood was like. And where he is now. Small talk does not have the negative connotation for me that it does for other people. For me it is like two dogs meeting and touching noses…a greeting to show each other that they are friendly and mean no harm. So meeting someone and breaking the ice with questions about where they live, or commenting on the weather, or whatever it may be, are gestures of friendliness. There is a tire mechanic who lives up the street from me in Tijuana. He doesn’t drone on about how passionate he is, or talk about how much he likes “deep” or “intellectual” conversations, or boast about how in touch with himself or the universe he is, or go to great lengths to tell everybody he meets how he is searching for deep philosophical meaning in our human existence. He simply leads a simple, hard, beautiful life. The last time we spoke he shared how much he likes to listen to quiet piano music while relaxing with his eyes closed in a sauna, drinking a cervesa and letting the music soak into his soul. This is all simply to say: come as you are. Whatever you like to talk about will be meaningful to me as well. I am an amateur filmmaker. (Strong emphasis on amateur.) I have insomnia and ASMR videos help me a bit with sleep. |
