Living a principled life of meaning, purpose, simplicity, and growth is my goal. Originally from New Jersey, I went to college (Pomona) and beyond in southern California but have spent most of my adult life in southern Arizona. I find the Sonoran Desert to be magical, and I hike a lot, but you can see beauty in most places if your mind is open to it. The beauty of any place, though, derives mainly from the people who populate it. Character traits I value include "compassion and altruism, placidness, patience, and slowness to anger, and abundant loving-kindness and truthfulness" (Exodus 34:6), as well as reverence for all life. The latter includes wearing a mask, to protect both others and myself, during the pandemic! Practical examples of these traits include: being mindful of the needs of the disabled and the vulnerable; uplifting others and taking care not to hurt their feelings; and giving people the benefit of the doubt. I look for ways to help others, but, whatever I do, I try to avoid self-serving feelings like self-validation and pride.
With my scientific background, I'm mostly a left-brained person, but I try to exercise the right half as well, although I fall a little short of being a polymath. I appreciate the contribution of art to life and especially the creativity behind it, although I like to view it not just for its aesthetic beauty but also as an extension of the person behind it. I'm informed and guided in all aspects of living by Jewish ethical values and teachings, including that we can learn from everyone (although I shun religious infrastructure that is hypocritical)! I've been vegan for 35 years. I don't engage in social media, which I feel is harmful to society and unbecoming, and try hard not to let technology control my life: artificial intelligence is no match for seichel. I've brought Jewish medicine and the values it represents to the world via the eponymous website. In a nutshell, it's an altruistic calling. In that capacity, I also fill the urgent need for a source of evenhanded, authoritative information on vegetarian nutrition.

I love gardening, writing, massage, cooking, and travel. Some of my favorite outings include gardens (especially in Maui!), live theater, theme parks, museums, and art shows. My mornings start out with some meditation, breathing exercises, Qi Gong, then a workout. I love creating things, whether it be digital or something eye-catching for the garden. I have a Master of Arts degree in Mathematics and one in Educational Technology. I fully retired from teaching in 2020. I’m the author of 12 books and manuals, mostly on computer-related topics.
I spend a lot of my time in the garden when not out and about. It's a tranquil retreat with plenty of fruit trees, garden beds, and a hydroponic tower. There is also a tea house, a flowing stream, and plenty of seating areas.
I am passionate about promoting a plant-strong lifestyle through writing, hosting pot lucks, and networking. I discovered this way of eating in 2012, and it has given me a new lease on my health. I believe strongly that our society needs to move in that direction if we are to cure our chronic diseases, protect our environment, and reduce animal suffering.

Much has changed in my life in the past 5 years, and now I am looking forward to the age of retirement, in a country that has taken my money over the years and spent it elsewhere. So the coming “retirement” will be more of a reinvention as I move from the “Big City” to a more self sufficient lifestyle.
If you too are thinking of a plant-based life with less stress, communing with nature, and being more creative, we may have a connection and that would be great. Not talking off-grid, I have to have Internet and lights, just a much smaller community that still holds values I did 30-40 years ago.
So if you wanna chat and see where things go, the coffee/tea is on me.
Here is some things about me ... I dislike this part as is sounds like I'm boasting, and that is not normal for me. Here are some of the personal highlights of my 50 plus years off the top of my head, and things like education and employment are not in there ;)
- I have toured Europe, East and West, in the Early 80s in a punk band
- Have created sculptures and artwork that sold and is publicly displayed
- Worked as an assignment photographer for two newspapers and a news magazine
- Own my own record label, and have composed and recorded nine complete albums
- Along with friends, and supporters have started two totally different charities
- Built my own home from the ground up with my own hands
- Climbed Mount Kilimanjaro and slept with giraffes
- Cycled and walked across all of Europe
... and none of these, or any one thing in my past defines me, because I believe that every day is a new one that holds endless possibilities, fun and adventure. Most of all no one should ever be limited by anything. Given enough time, effort and determination human beings can do amazing things, all of us.

I just don't see myself loving someone who doesn't care about killing / eating animals. For many of us, being a veggie is so much more than simply a diet.
I'm a former airline pilot changing careers (not by choice). My highly profitable airline was bought out, suddenly unexpectedly closed, the airline pilot retirement age was raised from 60 to 65 (no attrition for five years), and the economy was horrible. I sure miss flying the Boeing 727...the feeling of 48,000 pounds of thrust at my fingertips is difficult to duplicate! The beauty of the Earth from above is so breathtaking. A scratch in my eye from a brand new contact lens has cost me the career I so enjoyed. I went back to school and obtained my LPN, but have not used it yet due to a number of family tragedies. I had been taking care of my vegan Mom full time. Congestive heart failure is no fun. She fought a valiant battle, but is no longer with me. Now I am working on getting my house ready for sale to move into my parents (a few acres and a swimming pool).
I love music - tastes range from classical to oldies (Sinatra) to alternative, but I especially enjoy acoustic Latin / Mediterranean guitar. Hammocks - such a simple invention, but so relaxing! Canoeing, boating, bicycling, experiencing nature, tennis, or even throwing a Frisbee are all fun fair weather activities.
Based on my profile, you probably wouldn't guess I love to laugh, and joke around often. Sometimes my delivery is too dry for people to realize I'm joking...love watching the five second delay as someone gets it! I also enjoy a nice cuddle, going for walks, deep, and not so deep discussions.

I guess it is a universal truth that greater joy may be found in giving than receiving, perhaps even more so for an Irish man when it comes to personal compliments! If I were to dig deep into my archive, I might find words such as kind, thoughtful, affectionate, understanding, genuine, funny, and a real pet. My favorite vgetarian dishes include black beans with sweet potatoes, lentil soup, rice, wheat berries, carrots.
